Split or extract PDF pages (without uploading)
Need to split a PDF into parts or extract only certain pages? Real-world scenarios, common pitfalls, and how to do it locally in your browser — no upload, no account.
One big PDF, but you only need part of it — or you need to send it in chunks. Splitting and extracting pages are two sides of the same need: get the right pages out without hassle or privacy risk.
Real-world scenarios
- Email size limits: Most providers cap attachments around 25 MB. Splitting a report or scan into Part 1, Part 2 keeps you under the limit.
- Share one section: Send only chapter 3 from a manual, or just the signed page from a contract — extract those pages into a new PDF.
- Print or archive: Print only pages 5–12, or file just the invoice page from a long document. Extract keeps the rest untouched.
What we solve (and what we don’t)
We solve: Splitting one PDF into multiple files (by range or one page each), and extracting selected pages into a single new PDF — all in the browser, no upload. We don’t: Edit text or images inside the PDF, or password-protect the result (use a separate tool for that).
Five common errors and how to avoid them
- Wrong page numbers: The PDF might have a cover that isn’t “page 1” in the viewer. Open the file first and note the actual numbers you need.
- Mixing up split vs extract: Split = one PDF → many (e.g. every page separate). Extract = one PDF → one new PDF with only the pages you pick. Choose the right tool.
- Order of pages: Extracted pages keep their original order. To reorder, extract first, then merge in the order you want.
- Password-protected PDFs: If the PDF asks for a password to open, enter it in the tool when prompted. Without the password, we can’t read the file.
- Very large files: Hundreds of pages or huge scans can slow the browser. Try splitting in smaller batches or compress first if the file is mostly images.
Privacy note
When the tool runs locally in your browser, your file never leaves your device. That’s the default for FilKlar’s split and extract tools. No account, no storage on our side. If you use a Pro (server) option for another task, that’s different — we say so clearly. For more, see our privacy and security pages.
FAQ
Does the original file get changed? No. We only read a copy. Your original PDF stays as it is on your disk.
Is there a file size limit? The limit is your device’s memory and the browser. Very large files (e.g. hundreds of pages) may take longer or need to be split in steps.
Can I reorder pages when extracting? Extract keeps the original order. To get a new order, extract the pages you need, then use the merge tool to combine them in the order you want.
Do I need to upload the file? No. With the local split and extract tools, the file stays on your device. The browser reads it and does the work locally.
Split vs extract — which tool? Use split when you want one PDF turned into several (e.g. every page a separate file, or by ranges). Use extract when you want one new PDF containing only the pages you select.
